Ever since opening in 2025, Bunz has had a clear vision: build a brand around one item and do it exceptionally well. That one item? Smash burgers. Inspired by the classic American smash burger—a style of burger made by pressing a ball of ground beef directly onto a blistering hot griddle—rather than filling a menu with different, poorly-executed dishes, Bunz’s philosophy centers around building a concise menu where every item is executed consistently. Saigon is full of burger joints, and every location has hordes of passionate fans that will defend their chosen establishment to their last breath. Given the circumstances, how does one compete? Consistency, quality, and branding. Achieving that across every meal means Bunz leaves absolutely nothing to chance.

In order to attract customers to a venue only serving a select few items, that branding has to be simple, fun, and approachable. The name Bunz nails all of those in one syllable. It’s full of personality, just like a quality smash burger. Once Bunz had their name, their slogan followed suit: Smash First, Ask Later. It’s the brand’s whole mindset condensed into a few words. Don’t overthink it. Just go for it. Marketing this type of willingness to try something new in the simplest terms for customers has been crucial for making an entry point into Saigon’s burger market. They are bold and confident, establishing a memorable identity where many local burger joints often treat branding as an afterthought. But bold marketing means nothing if the product can't back up the hype. To deliver on the other two benchmarks—consistency and quality—the Bunz team, led by owner Adrien Chong Yen, has prioritized an approach focused on sourcing the best products and working from the ground up, starting with the very foundation of the flavor profile.

It all begins with the beef. Bunz uses 100% premium Australian Wagyu, specially prepared to a custom specification optimized for the intense heat of the flat-top grill. It’s a calculated choice for texture, ensuring the perfect fat-to-lean ratio yielding a tantalizing caramelized crust while keeping the inside as juicy as possible. Beyond the beef patties, Bunz Brioche buns are baked using their own recipe and the burger sauce is made in-house as well. In this manner, when it comes to the ingredients, Bunz aims to create something greater than the sum of its parts. Although they keep things simple, they refuse to compromise on quality.

If there is one piece of the puzzle that has become crucial to Bunz amassing a devout fan base, it’s their most recommended menu item: the West Coast Burger—an irresistible pairing of the perfectly smashed Wagyu patty with the rich, deep sweetness of their signature caramelized onions. When the District 0 team stopped by to experience why Bunz was becoming a household name in Saigon’s burger community, all three of us indulged in the menu’s standouts: the mouth-watering West Coast Burgers, Truffle Fries—which many regulars claim are some of the best in town—and a round of Bunz Craft Lager to wash it all down. Sitting there, tearing through our burgers, fries, and beers, it soon became clear why Bunz has grown so much in the past year. The place feels clean and polished the moment you enter. The staff are warm and welcoming. Most of all, they simply deliver a high-quality smash burger that satisfies your cravings.

Even the decor speaks to this boldness with some of my favorite details I noticed in the room—vintage framed prints of the iconic Elvis Presley signing autographs for a crowd of fans or a player feeling lucky and rolling dice at a casino craps table. The space subtly tips its cap to the nostalgic ambiance that an old-fashioned diner might evoke but replaces the old with the new, refining the concept to fit Saigon’s sleek urban landscape. As you look around Bunz, you’ll see its interior is covered with a striking black and gold color palette. It's a design choice that speaks volumes: the matte black grounds the space in simplicity, while the gold lettering adds a touch of royalty. It reminds you that while the food is delightfully messy, the execution is treated with absolute prestige.

All that said, Bunz wasn’t always as developed as it is today. When the founders first looked at Ho Chi Minh City’s culinary landscape, they noticed a distinct gap: plenty of places served burgers, but few were willing to stake their entire reputation on mastering the execution of a true smash burger. Interestingly, the brand almost staked their entire model on this with their first name, Saigon Smash. It was clear and straightforward, which is what they wanted, but it also felt a bit too aggressive, too tied to a single location. They wanted something that felt more like an open invitation. Landing on Bunz allowed them to strip away the aggressiveness, creating an approachable gateway that both homesick expats and a wave of local Vietnamese diners have gone on to embrace. Thanks to this rapid growth, they’ve been able to expand their operations. Today, the brand operates at three locations, each offering a completely distinct vibe depending on what you’re after.

First, there’s the An Phú location where Bunz first opened. Over time, it’s become a massive neighborhood favorite, perched comfortably on the first floor of its building. Tucked away in a quieter, residential part of Saigon, this relaxed atmosphere comes from being away from the heavy city traffic. The streets here are wider and large houses line the pavements, making it an ideal getaway for families looking for an afternoon snack or locals looking to unwind.
Second, there’s a Bunz located in District 1 on Lý Tự Trọng street. Located on a rooftop in the heart of the city, it attracts a mix of locals, office workers, and tourists looking for a quality burger. This downtown venue is great for busy professionals and travelers after a taste of home, conveniently situated right where the action is.

Lastly, there is the Bình Dương outlet. The goal in opening a location outside of the city is to bring the same Bunz experience to the growing Hikari community—a massive, modern eco-commercial and dining complex located right in the heart of Bình Dương. This move beyond Saigon points to Bunz’s plans for the future: that of expanding beyond the city and bringing Bunz’s high-quality smash burgers, service, and vibe to different parts of Vietnam.

No matter which door you walk through, the underlying promise Bunz sets forth remains entirely unchanged: keep things simple, stay consistent, and never compromise. It is a formula that has served them incredibly well over the past year, but they are also clear their vision for the brand doesn’t stop there. As proven with the opening of Bunz Bình Dương, the team is always looking for opportunities to grow. Besides developing more locations across Vietnam, they’re also experimenting with new items on their menu or collaborating with other brands that share those same foundational values such as when they teamed up with Punch King Fitness to host a 3km Sunday morning Bunz Run in An Phú last December.

So far, Bunz has managed to cut through the noise of Saigon's hyper-competitive food scene by mastering the details that matter most: delivering top-tier quality, unmatched consistency, and maintaining a bold branding identity that leaves a lasting impression. It’s the kind of place you know will deliver the same exceptional experience every single time. So, the next time those burger cravings hit, don’t overthink it. Do what Bunz does: smash first, ask later.
